Talent Might Get You Started. Will Power Helps You Finish.

Everybody loves the highlight.

The game-winning shot. The championship celebration. The scholarship announcement. The trophy being raised.

But sports aren't really built in those moments.

They're built in everything that happened before them.

The missed shots.

The losses.

The conditioning.

The early mornings.

The days when practice wasn't fun.

The season when you weren't starting.

The moment somebody else was better than you.

And the decision you made about what to do next.

That's Will.

I recently came across research from Ohio State University examining the relationship between playing sports as a kid and something researchers call "grit"—the combination of passion and perseverance needed to pursue long-term goals.

The study found that adults who participated in youth sports were more likely to report higher levels of grit later in life. Researchers believe part of the reason may be pretty simple: sports repeatedly give kids opportunities to struggle, overcome challenges, fail and try again.

That caught my attention because it's exactly what I believe the Will part of our Play 4 Rings philosophy is supposed to represent.

Will isn't pretending something doesn't hurt.

It isn't winning every time.

And it certainly isn't some motivational speech telling kids they can accomplish anything simply because they want it badly enough.

Will is what happens when wanting something meets resistance.

You want to make the team.

But you get cut.

Now what?

You want more playing time.

But you're sitting on the bench.

Now what?

You want to become a better shooter.

But you've missed 50 shots today.

Now what?

You want to win the championship.

But your team just lost.

Now what?

Those might be the most important two words in youth sports.

Because life is going to ask the exact same question.

You didn't get accepted.

Now what?

You didn't get the job.

Now what?

The business idea failed.

Now what?

You made a mistake.

Now what?

Things didn't go according to plan.

Now what?

We can't prepare young people for every obstacle they'll face in life.

But maybe sports can give them a place to practice what they'll do when those obstacles arrive.

That's why I don't think our job at Play 4 Rings is to make everything easy for kids.

We should create opportunities. Remove unnecessary financial barriers. Provide good coaching, mentorship and resources.

But we shouldn't remove the struggle that makes sports valuable.

Let them compete.

Let them lose sometimes.

Let them sit on the bench.

Let them face somebody better.

Let them miss the shot.

Then help them understand that none of those things have to be the end of the story.

Come back tomorrow.

That's where Will Power gets built.

And there's an important balance here. The Ohio State researchers also warned that grit can be taken too far. Perseverance doesn't mean ignoring injuries, staying in unhealthy situations or believing quitting is always failure. Sometimes maturity means knowing when it's time to change direction.

The lesson isn't never quit anything.

The lesson is:

Don't quit just because something got hard.

Learn the difference.

That's something a young person can carry long after the basketball stops bouncing.

At Play 4 Rings, we're Building Triple Threats For Life.

The Body prepares you to compete.

The Mind teaches you to think.

And the Will helps you answer one of life's most important questions:

What are you going to do when things don't go your way?

Maybe you won't always have the answer.

Maybe you'll need help.

Maybe you'll need to change the plan.

But hopefully something inside you remembers all those practices, losses, mistakes and difficult moments when you learned that struggling didn't mean you were finished.

It simply meant you had another decision to make.

Now what?

Get up.

Learn from it.

And when the situation deserves another shot—

keep going.
